Meaningful Gifts in Japanese Washi Paper | Kindred Collection

Connection has always fascinated me. It’s those quiet, almost invisible threads that bind us together — a look, a word, or even just the comfort of knowing someone is walking beside you.

The Kindred Collection is my way of celebrating that bond. Each piece is made using a rare origami fold that begins with two separate squares of Japanese washi paper, gently folded and intertwined into one. To me, it feels like a little metaphor for life: two souls, each with their own beauty and story, finding strength and harmony when they come together.

The Meaning Behind the Washi Patterns

When I choose washi paper for a collection, I don’t just look at the colours — I think about what they symbolise, what they remind me of, and how they connect us back to nature and the world around us. These papers carry such deep meaning, and each one I’ve chosen for Kindred feels personal.

Navy Waves

This pattern of soft blue waves on white instantly takes me back to walking by the sea, especially during whale season here in Coogee. The ocean is always moving, just like life itself. To me, it symbolises resilience and the way we can move forward together, even when the tides shift.

Navy Gold

There’s something about the contrast of deep navy and shimmering gold that feels timeless. I see it as a balance of stillness and light — those quiet evenings when the sky is deep blue and a golden sunset breaks through. It’s a reminder that even in the calmest moments, beauty shines.

Navy with Golden Japanese Calligraphy

The golden script on this paper reminds me of treasured words — poems, blessings, and the wisdom we pass down. I think about the handwritten notes I’ve kept over the years, small but powerful reminders of love and encouragement. The navy feels grounding and loyal, while the gold feels like hope written across the sky.

Flora Grey with Gold on White

I love this paper because it reminds me of my dad's garden after rain — soft, fresh, and full of promise. The grey and gold flowers feel delicate but strong, like the quiet moments of renewal that nature offers us. It’s about the beauty that blossoms when we take time to nurture the things we love.

Black with Gold Japanese Calligraphy and Golden Flora on Ivory

This one feels rich and grounding to me — like walking through a forest at dusk when the light catches on the leaves and everything feels timeless. The black represents strength, while the gold blooms feel celebratory, almost like little sparks of joy against a calm backdrop.

When I fold two of these papers together, I see two worlds meeting — their contrasts creating something more beautiful than either could have been on its own.

Designed for Him and Her

The Kindred Collection isn’t just for women. It’s for anyone who treasures connection.

For her: simple stud earrings for an everyday touch, or flowing golden and silver bar dangles for moments that call for elegance.

For him: sleek origami cufflinks, understated but full of meaning — the kind of gift that tells a story without saying a word.

Each piece is sealed to be water-resistant and made to last, so they’re not just jewellery — they’re keepsakes that carry a memory, a bond, a story.

Why Kindred?

I chose the word kindred because it speaks to that rare feeling when you meet someone whose soul feels familiar. It might be your partner, your closest friend, your sister, or even someone who simply feels like home.

This collection is a quiet tribute to those relationships — the ones that shape us, steady us, and remind us we’re never truly alone.

Shop The Kindred Collection  — these are made in small batches, and no two pieces will ever be folded quite the same way.

Wear your story, fold by fold.
